During the summer of 1937.

During the summer of 1937, Otisville locals Dale Smith, aged 13, and Everett Betts, aged 7, noticed branches sticking up in the waters of Picnic Lake. 


The boys were intrigued and reached for the branches, only to discover the “wood” wasn’t really wood at all… 

The boys pulled out the antlers and skeletal remains of a huge 6- by 6-foot elk rack.

 After leaving the skull and bones behind, they took the antlers home and hung them up years afterward. 

In the 1980s, Smith donated the antlers to the Otisville Area Historical Association.

 The museum staff sent the antlers to a lab in Florida for carbon dating testing. 

The results shocked the town—not only were the antlers much older than the original guess of 70 years, but they were remnants of a now-extinct species of elk, the Eastern elk.

 The carbon dating results posited that the antlers could be from as early as 1520, but were most likely from between 1640 and 1660. 

Today, the antlers are on display at the Otisville Area Historical Association’s museum.

The terrible Story of Joy Lofhthouse.

Joy Lofthouse (14 February 1923 – 15 November 2017)  was a British pilot having joined the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) as an ab initio pilot in December 1943.  She went on to fly Spitfires and bombers for the Air Transport Auxiliary, and was one of only 168 "Attagirls" who served In 1943, 20-year-old Lofthouse and her elder sister Yvonne joined the Air Transport Auxiliary, after they saw an ad in a magazine which was seeking women to learn how to fly.  Only 17 out of 2,000 applicants were accepted, including Joy, who had never even driven a car, and Yvonne. She was one of a total of 168 women who were members of the Air Transport Auxiliary.  Her job was to deliver aircraft from the factories where they were made to the airfields where they were to be flown from by Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots.  Lofthouse was able to fly 38 different types of aircraft. A 34-year old man, Emeneke Agugwo, has landed in trouble in Lagos State for allegedly luring a 16-year old girl and defiling her after sucking her breasts. P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Okesanya Street, Papa Ajao Mushin area of Lagos, where they reside. The Police alleged that the suspect lured the victim to his apartment, sucked her breasts and she became confused. And being unable to resist the act, she was eventually defiled by the suspect in the process, which angered the victim and made her to expose what happened to her.  The Terrible Story Of Mildred Harnack was beheaded on Hitler’s direct order.   Born in Milwaukee, she was 26 when she moved to Germany to pursue a PhD.  As an American grad student in Berlin, she saw Germany swiftly progress from democracy to fascist dictatorship.  She and her husband Arvid began holding secret meetings in their apartment.  She recruited working-class Germans into the resistance, helped Jews escape, plotted acts of sabotage, and collaborated in writing leaflets that denounced Hitler and called for revolution. "Mildred Harnack nicknamed their resistance group “the Circle.” The group was diverse: its members were Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, atheist.  They were factory workers and office workers, students and professors, journalists and artists. Hans-Georg Henke - 16 year old German Flakhelfer crying after being captured by the US 9th Army in Germany on April 3, 1945. (Flakhelfer; anti-aircraft warfare helpers of 15 to 17 year old German students during World War II.)  According to the story that Henke maintained throughout his life, he was based in Stettin with a battery of 88mm guns.  As the Soviets advanced so the German forces were pushed back towards Rostock.  It was here where the Soviets finally overran their unit, that these photographs were taken. The alternative story is given by the American photojournalist John Florea.  He alleges that he took these photographs in Hessen, in the village of Hüttenberg-Rechtenbach, which is just north of Frankfurt am Main.  The area in which the photos of Hans-Georg were taken is incontrovertibly Hessen. Siegfried 'Kongo' Müller, the Wehrmacht man who became a mercenary in the Congo... 36 years ago today in 1983, the former soldier of the Third Reich and officer of Mad Mike Hoare’s mercenary commando in the Congo, Siegfried “Kongo” Müller, died of stomach cancer in Boksburg, Johannesburg.  Though not as successful a mercenary as the likes of Hoare or Denard, Müller became a popular figure of some renown back home in both the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR, the latter using him as the object of propaganda to depict West Germany as a neo-colonial state.  🇺🇲WWII uncovered: Grammy Award Winner  Melvin James Kaminsky: From the Battle of the Bulge to Blazing Saddles. 🎶With the 65th Grammy Awards airing tonight we would like to pay respect to those who served and went on to be awarded this prestigious accolade.  "Melvin James Kaminsky joined the US Army right out of high school in 1944 at the age of 17.  A native of Brooklyn New York, Melvin was recruited by the elite Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and sent to Virginia Military Institute to be taught skills such as military engineering, as well as horsemanship and saber-wielding.  When the combat arms complained that ASTP deprived them of the brightest enlisted men, the Army terminated the program after young Private Kaminsky had received twelve weeks of training.  He then went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for regular basic training.
