🇺🇲 WWII uncovered: Memorial Day 2023: Honoring the Heroes We Lost: Major Art Moseley, Headquarters Company, 11th Airborne Division: While the 11th Airborne was fighting on Leyte in December of 1944, monsoon rains prevented larger aircraft from resupplying the starving Paratroopers of the 511th PIR in the mountains.  Despite the dangers to himself, pilot Major Arthur "Art" Lee Moseley of Rochelle, Texas, loaded his Stinson L-5 Sentinel Piper Cub with ammunition and rations and headed into the cloud-covered mountains. Using only basic instruments, Moseley flew several "resupply missions" a day on what became known as The Moseley Milk Run while the enemy fired at him from below.  When Art, or “Phone Glider 3”, flew over friendly units, he would ask what the Paratroopers needed, then his spotter in the backseat would push supplies out of the plane. It was a life-saving campaign that kept the 511th fighting, and alive. As F-511's Lieutenant Ralph Ermatinger noted,...

🇸🇪 🇵🇱 In WWII, Sweden may have remained officially neutral, but Swedes, well . . .

🇸🇪 🇵🇱 In WWII, Sweden may have remained officially neutral, but Swedes, well . . . Everyone who knows a thing or two about that war has heard of Raoul Wallenberg, the rescuer of Hungarian Jews, or Count Bernadotte and his white buses ferrying concentration camp inmates to safety.  Yet, more Swedes were on the light side of the force. Take Swedish volunteers in Finland, invaded by the USSR.  Take all these good souls who accepted the Jews smuggled out of Denmark in their homes. Take charming Elna Gistedt. This operetta singer came to Warsaw in 1922 on a two-week contract, fell madly in love with a Polish businessman, married him and stayed for good.  By the time WWII broke out in 1939, she’d gotten head over heels with the country too, which loved Elna back for that lyric soprano and charming personality of hers.  And then, with the German occupation of Poland and Warsaw, the soprano found herself living in a city taken over by the Sopranos. The German mobst...

On August 1, 1943, US Army Air Forces bombed oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania.

Image
On August 1, 1943, US Army Air Forces bombed oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania.   It was part of the Allies’ oil campaign, to cut off Germany’s petroleum supply during World War II. In June 1942 a squad of 13 B-24 Liberators attacked Ploesti, Romania, which provided Germany and the Axis powers with about 30% of their oil.   The attack inflicted minimal damage, but encouraged Germany and Romania to better defend the refineries.   They set up anti-aircraft defenses, many hidden in haystacks, railroad cars, and fake buildings.   They also had five squadrons totaling nearly 300 planes ready to defend Ploesti.   These combined defenses made it one of the most heavily defended Axis targets in Europe. The Allies planned another attack for August 1, 1943.  The attack, dubbed Operation Tidal Wave, would target nine oil refineries around Ploesti.   It was carried out by the Ninth and Eighth Air Force, totaling 1,751 aircrew flying 178...

An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger):

Image
An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger): During earlier food shortages in Ireland, including in 1822 and 1831, charitable bodies had been set up to provide relief at a local level, and some of these were revived following the first failure of the potato crop in 1845. But after 1846 donations came from all over the world, even from people who had no connection with Ireland. This help cut across religious, national and economic differences. It came from people who were themselves poor, including former slaves in the Caribbean, Native Americans and prisoners in Britain. Heads of states were also involved—Queen Victoria, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and the president of the United States. Extensive fund-raising was carried out in Ireland by all sections of society.  Resident landlords were generally involved, although many absentees were criticised for their indifference. Even children raised funds: for example, pupils in a school in Armagh City collected for the local poor in 1847....
